Our Juror - Anne deMille Flood

I draw my inspiration for my colored pencil work from those things closest to me, my family, my pets and my hometown. Through a process of layering, blending and mixing the translucent colors of my pencils I hope to express depth and realism in my work as well as communicate a feeling for my subjects.

I have been teaching colored pencil workshops since 1998 and my experience as a teacher combined with a love of animals has led me to author a book titled "Realistic Pet Portraits in Colored Pencil" due for release in June of 2004.

I invite you to visit my galleries of animal art, as well as a page devoted to renderings of some of the favorite places in my home town of Tacoma Washington, at http://www.annedemilleflood.com.

Judge's statement:

"First let me say how impressive this show is and how much I enjoyed viewing the hard work and creativity of so many artists. I know full well how being judged can either inspire or disappoint an artist, but I want each and everyone to understand how subjective judging can be and how the personal tastes and perspective of the judge influences the result. On any given day, any one of the pieces in this show could have been a winner, and my personal preferences do not in any way diminish the wonderful works that were not chosen for an award.

I focused on emotion, mood and humor for my judging. Each one of the pieces chosen was technically and stylistically exceptional, but what really drove me to choose them was the feeling that exuded from the piece. Whether it was the almost tangible effect of the denim fabric or the humor of the two dogs under the blanket, the pieces I chose evoked an emotion in me and drew me into the picture. In all the cases I became involved in the piece and they allowed me to get a personal and private peek into the mind of the artist. That is exactly what I want from a piece of art. I want to feel something and see a subject or event in a different way.You can also see from my judging that lighting was a strong factor in many of my choices. I personally love strong, dynamic light sources or effects, which was definitely the case in the Best of Show Piece. It not only gives me a glimpse into a personal and highly charged moment, but the play of the light shining through the water really sets and unusual stage for the event. The strong moody light of the shadows cast on the dog's face in the 3rd place winner and the intense sunlight shining on the hair of the redheaded girl (4th place) really drew me into the piece.

I wish everyone good luck with their art, and hope the journey is as exciting and fulfilling as it has been for me.
